After a sleepless night with an increasingly unwell
10 week old baby, thank you to Dr Bill Meyers for getting out of
bed at 6a.m. on a Sunday morning and meeting me at the Landsborough
Medical Centre.
I knew Lachlan was far from well, I asked Bill
how bad did he think it was, he replied "As bad as it gets
Shona, I think Lachlan has meningitis, do you want to drive him
or do you want me to ambulance him through to Nambour. I drove.
Thank you to Dr Grant Stone, Pediatrician, who
was standing in Emergency waiting for us. His words were "This
baby is certainly very ill but I'm not 100% sure of meningitis,
he is still quite alert - we will know after the spinal tap"
And later the apologetic look on Grants face when he uttered "I
was wrong, it is meningitis, Lachlan is putting up a great fight
and we are doing everything to help him win this one.
Lachlan is a Scottish name meaning "Great
Warrior" never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that his
greatest battle may be when he was a baby and fighting for his life.
Thank you to the staff of Nambour for responding
so quickly 3 times the first night when the breathing monitor went
off. You hit the door at a million miles an hour - 1.2 seconds tops.
You referred to the alarm as bells - it sounded like a fire engine.
It is very cold and dark in the early hours of
the morning when you are sitting watching your baby breathe - this
little person connecting to different monitors and a drip. Thank
you to the many staff that offered support, for the many coffees
and for caring. Thank you to Cathy, a night nurse for sharing your
cheese & biscuits & mars bar - you knew I wasn't eating
Thank you to Grant Stone and the bizarre hours
that you visited.- 11p.m. -3a.m. -5a.m. -2p.m. "Oh I was just
passing and I thought I would call in and see how the "Little
Fighter" is going." I could never understand why you kept
turning that T.V. on - now I realize you were checking if Lachlan
could see or hear.
Thank you for not commenting how I was still wearing
the same daggy tracksuit pants and teeshirt when you discharged
us, it never occurred to me to change my clothes.
How do you say thank you to the people that save the lives of 10
week old babies?
How do you say thank you to the people that save the life of your
ten week old baby?
You say thank you from the bottom of your heart and with every
ounce of your being.
Maybe you even write a book or maybe you buy one.
Lachlan is now a perfectly healthy 9 year old boy
who verbalized "I wish my Mother was an Octopus"
Thank you Nambour Hospital Childrens Ward
